Analysis
This analysis will be looking at all the different techniques, that are used in creating a game case. It will be focussing on the graphical techniques used on the Battlefield 3 cover, which is a popular game, for many platforms.
Section 1
The designer uses size to give contrast between the main character, the soldier, and the other elements of the game, the tank, planes, and landscape. In the foreground, is a soldier, and in the background, is a small tank, and plane. The soldier is the main character within the game, therefore the biggest focal point on the cover. The soldier is illuminated by the flash of a grenade. The soldier is shown to be real, looking forwards, ready for action and ready for war, to appeal to the target audience, who like war games, and want games which are as close to the reality of war as possible.
The main image on the front of the game case is in contrast to the text which is small, this makes the audience look at the soldier first. The font is simple, digital, and crisp, using only grey. It is also in capital letters, making it very easy to read. The main colour for the game case is black, the only contrasting colours are those of fire, which illuminate the soldier. The graphics are mainly grey tones.
In this game case repetition has been used a lot throughout the case. The dark colours have been used on either side of the case to make the game more appealing, to its target audience, as it is a game of war, gritty, it is not a fairy story. It is not a fun, family game, it wants to portray the reality of war, which is not rainbow coloured, but dark, and black. The main soldier has been used twice on the game case, on the front and the back. This is used to make the game stand out from the rest of the games on the shelf, from those within the same genre like Call of Duty. The audience is drawn in by the image, which is lifelike, looking out from the game, on both the front and back covers, inviting the game player to take up the challenge of entering this world. It also makes a logo for the game and also an emblem.
Alignment has been used on this game cover, on the back of the game cover the soldier's head and the text to the right is aligned to please the eye. The gameplay images are also aligned with the text above it. Apart from that there is not much alignment on this game case.
The soldier and the screenshots have been shown together to attract the market audience, by displaying some of the scenes that you, as the soldier, will encounter within the game. They also provide a link between the soldier and the game, which is created by placing them in close proximity to each other. The subtitle at the back, is positioned next to the soldier, it is shown to be like a storyboard, as if the soldier is shouting these words. It links the game together. The font used is also the same as that used in the main title, which gives continuity, and consistency. The game description, is positioned below this subtitle, and above the screen shots, it gives a clear idea what the game is about, also left aligned to the screen shots, making it look organised, and keeping all the details of the game in close proximity to each other, so it is easy for someone to find out what the game is about.
All the important text at the bottom has been placed at the bottom of the case, at the back so it is easy to find and to read, but also so it doesn’t detract from the rest of the graphic used to show the game.
Section 2
The genre of the game is a strategy based, role play, war game. It is obvious that it is a war game, as it has a soldier on the front cover, in the background are planes, tanks, and destruction. The soldier is also displayed on the back of the case, along with screenshots of the game.
The overall layout is sparse, it consists of a soldier, and in the background a plane, and a tank. It is very organised, the text on the cover is at a right angle to that on the spine.
It is very formal, and angular.
The Battlefield three game case is moody and dark, the only white space used, is that which contains all the important information which has to be included on all game software, such as copyright information.
The font is simple, digital, and crisp, using only grey. It is San Serif, it is also in capital letters, making it very easy to read.
The hierarchy makes the reader look down the cover. The soldier is the most prominent, by lighting him up with flames, and making him bigger than anything else on the cover. The audience is drawn to this figure. The reader is then drawn to the images behind the soldier, the elements of war, tanks, planes, which are smaller.I think that a grid has been utilised, as the text is aligned, and the whole layout, is aligned formally, in a tabular format, with pictures, and text next to them.
The scene on the front, is a scene of war, with the soldier in full military uniform, ready and waiting for war. The photography is very powerful, the soldier is looking ready for war, this is created by making the man stand up straight and arms to his side, he is made to look as if he is waiting, ready for the forthcoming mission, which the user will undertake. The scene is completed with demolished buildings in the background, and a plane and a tank. The colour scheme is quite dark and moody, this is what war would be like at night. The only highlights on the case is the flash of fire from a grenade. there is no ornamentation on this game case that I can see. On the game case there is lots of institutional information for example there is all the copyright information on the bottom of the back, logos to stand for large companies and the barcode so the game can be sold at the stores. the photo package is the image at the front of the game case as it is the largest and the most dominant.
